What Is a Jurat?

A jurat is a notarial act generally used when the signer must swear or affirm that the contents of a document are true.

For a jurat, the signer personally appears before the notary, signs the document in the notary's presence, and takes an oath or affirmation.

When an oath or affirmation is required, the notary administers it as part of the notarial act.
